Work and Travel

Has anyone tried it yet? My brother is already there, working hard.

I haven't tried it, but one thing interests me. They say that after a year of working in some countries, you get permanent resident status. Is that true? And what is it usually like to work there? And what alternative do you have? It's probably better to work there for a while and then leave altogether than to go to the army. Right?
