There are exactly seventeen syllables in Japanese, in a 5:7:5 format. In Russian, there are significantly more syllables on average – for example, it is impossible to translate classic haiku from Japanese 5:7:5 into Russian; usually, the number of syllables increases during translation.

And in haiku, metaphor, understatement, and expressing a thought through natural phenomena are more important.
