A difficult question for many compatriots. It's practically a riddle. Moreover, it's a uniquely Russian problem, as it revolves around a word, or rather, its translation. An olive is the fruit of an olive tree, while a "maslina" is the fruit of the same tree, but "translated" into Russian. Compare this: in Spain, there's one name – aceituna, derived from the word "aceite" – oil. Essentially, our translated "maslina" is what oil is made from. And whether they are green, black, or red, all are aceituna! And the Spanish certainly know what they grow… The color depends on the variety of olive tree and the ripeness of the harvested crop. Think of it like green, brown, and red tomatoes – this is just to make the description more vivid… Although, this is also quite a Spanish example – here, they prefer green and brown tomatoes in salads, and they even grow varieties specifically for this purpose, as they taste best when not fully ripe.
