What defenders? It was the civilian population escaping the city... And the steamboat is just a minor detail; the goal was to kill civilians out of spite. There's no point in discussing it. If soldiers were forced to charge machine guns with sabers simply because the command, which was looking at a globe at that moment, ordered them to attack and advance through minefields, and no one protested, then what's the point in talking about them refusing to carry out an order against the civilian population? Here's another example: during the siege of Leningrad, when the famine began, people tried to leave the city. The commander of the 18th Army reported this to Hitler, and he ordered the troops, and the infantry in particular, not to let anyone leave the city and to push them back into Leningrad, effectively condemning them to starvation, and they carried out the orders perfectly, including the infantry.

Naive. In any war, everyone doesn't care about anyone except themselves. And they went to Afghanistan, and, by the way, to Vietnam, Korea, etc., precisely because of their weakness.
