Furthermore, within horror itself, I see two main currents: supernatural and natural horror.
I definitely prefer the first direction. It is primarily based on things that are incomprehensible, things connected to other realms and dimensions. This is the direction that Howard Phillips Lovecraft wrote in, and he is my favorite author. I have read all of his completed works, as well as the essay "Supernatural Horror in Literature," where he discusses the origins of the genre and lists many of his predecessors and their works that are worth reading. Lovecraft's books stimulate the imagination and send shivers down your spine. Although he didn't publish a single book during his lifetime, he influenced the development of horror and science fiction as a whole. I highly recommend it to those who haven't read it yet.
I have also watched films in this direction. Of the ones I've seen, I can only remember "Insidious" and "The Exorcism of Emily Rose." The films are not bad, but they have too much Hollywood in them.
I am generally less fond of the second direction. It is based on the natural human fear of death, and with the development of civilization and comfort, unpleasant details have been added, primarily gore. The genre began to develop in the nineteenth century – at that time, cheap, sensational books about characters such as Jack the Ripper and Sweeney Todd were very popular among the lower classes. Later, cinema appeared, and it was in cinema that the genre continued to develop.
Most of the films in this genre are very unpleasant to me. Moreover, I can't stand it when a friend laughs at how a person cuts pieces of meat out of himself (Saw, number whatever). When I asked him to explain, he replied, "Come on, it's obvious that he's not really cutting himself." I don't understand this.
I can only mention the film-musical "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street." The emphasis there is not on the dismemberment of people, but on the dark, pessimistic atmosphere.
I haven't read any books in this direction.
Returning to the poll, everyone determines their own attitude towards the genre. That's why I don't vote in the poll.
