They are with the humans because Ubisoft wanted people to think that it's the same world. Griffin Empire, Nicholas... doesn't that remind you of anything?
They will withstand it; they can withstand armor, and since a griffin is a mix of a lion and an eagle, they will withstand it, and if not, the elves will make them better.
Griffins should be with the elves; they fit well there... :)
