In general, mongooses hunt for all sorts of small creatures, such as lizards, frogs, invertebrates, etc. Catching a snake is a great success for them. By the way, among such non-venomous snakes, there are tropical snakes and some colubrids, which also spread their cervical ribs and form a "hood," like a cobra (imitative behavior). This is usually all that happens – such a snake does not inflict a dangerous bite, and from the outside, it is clear that the mongoose is eating the cobra. Mongooses do not have immunity to snake venom. Hunting truly venomous snakes and grabbing them by the head is likely possible only for a few individuals (by the way, snake catchers also exist among ordinary cats), but fakirs immediately use them for the corresponding tricks, and it turns out that mongooses are famous for this. This fame did the mongooses a disservice. At one time, they were brought to Martinique and Saint Lucia to fight the aforementioned jararacas and labarias, but these are completely different snakes – with long, retractable venomous teeth, equipped with thermolocators, and with very good reaction speed, not like cobras. These snakes, in order to inject a substantial dose of venom, simply need to strike the predator with their needle-like teeth. In principle, the mongoose itself is about the right size for a labaria (and probably a jararaca) as prey.
