3) I replied that the clue isn't "four brutes", but "animals, not people."

The phrase "brutes acting like animals" wasn't in the newspaper, and the clue is precisely that specific phrase, not the general meaning of the sentence, and everyone knows this perfectly well. That's the essence of clues – to subtly weave keywords into a sentence so that they don't disrupt the overall meaning. And you're trying to create the impression that the newspaper contained a phrase about "four brutes acting like animals." There wasn't a phrase exactly like that, and there isn't even the word "four" there! :mad:
