No, let's not assume that. After all, it is well known that this is a Russian word that came to us from ancient times and was corrupted by various Poles.
And yes, Old Church Slavonic has as much in common with modern Ukrainian as it does with modern Russian.
Oh, and this is another thing that saddens me. I have often noticed, both in school and on television, the promotion of patriotism. It would be fine, but this patriotism bordered on racism and was half made up of "beat the Muscovites." Sad :(
