I don't know if it's Jebus Cross affecting it or something else - I wasn't given any logs at all - not a single magic to choose either

Jebus Cross doesn't affect it at all; during the map generation stage, the hero's skill tree is formed. It can only be changed by visiting a monk or a hut.
As for magic, it's unclear - every 4th, 8th, etc. level (for fighters, for mages it's roughly every 3rd) offers some kind of magic, same goes for Wisdom..
