He also always draws parallels between the writer's personality, his lifestyle, his psyche, his biography as a whole, and the style of his works. All of this is, of course, true, but for me, it's like dissecting love with a scalpel.

But still... everyone writes better about the subject they know. Tolstoy knew high society better than Gogol and Dostoevsky - that's why he has so many princes, balls, and French in his works. And Gogol's books have more non-titled nobility. And in general, that's great.
It's much worse when they write without knowing the subject. In the case of the missing wallet, machine gunners stand in the courtroom, and the druzhina puts its best fighters forward when an enemy approaches... this is all written by modern authors.

P.S. I just read an interesting topic and wanted to figure out for myself why I still haven't read Dostoevsky.
