They didn't have horns at all. You might as well say that a trident is a huge fork.
On the helmet, however, they could also attach details that didn't provide any additional protection. For example, there has long been a question of why the Germans attached horns to iron helmets, and whether this was dangerous (would the neck break if the impact falls on the horn).
