I'm currently reading "Songs of Maldoror" by Lautréamont. It's a truly remarkable book. The narrative is told by a demon, which is already a unique aspect, and it's all seasoned with a good dose of black humor and nihilism. Even after reading the first paragraph, the question of why it was so influential, giving rise to both symbolism and surrealism, and becoming one of the best works of French romanticism, is answered.
