These paths are definitely unnecessary. The point is to kill everyone; what difference does it make who you spare? This reduces the fun.

Whether they are needed or not can only be determined when we get the finished game. The point is to gather an army, level up a hero, and defeat the enemy, not to clear the map of all neutrals.
