I wouldn't claim that Flandre is one of the unicorns if I thought they wouldn't have sent a note (like, "the note was pointless").

They sent a note along with the Night Detective (ND) ability, received the result in the morning via the newspaper and private messages. If the unicorn is killed, then Charlie is found. If, after sending the ND ability, Nebko immediately told them, "You didn't find Charlie with the ND ability, and by the way, you closed your eyes, so Charlie is here," and then they sent the note, it wouldn't make sense. But I think this scenario is not only implausible but also just plain stupid, because they went and left a note for Charlie. You said, "lol, the note is pointless," but what does that have to do with anything? You could say it was a miscalculation, for example, but what does "pointless" mean? It's pointless to send the ND ability in the scenario I described, just as it's pointless to throw two blocks at a player if one is definitely enough, or to kill a player in one night and then throw an ND ability at them, which goes according to the order of abilities and/or doesn't matter. That's what pointless things are. But hitting TaKo without knowing she's already dead, or sending a note in the hope of finding Charlie, and then receiving the news of the unicorn's death in the morning, is not pointless. It's just bad luck, a miscalculation. I define "pointless" as a completely stupid, unthoughtful action. Stupidity and bad luck in a random situation are different things.
