There's no need to place such a huge emphasis on the hero. In Heroes, the hero is almost always just a commander, leading troops with their own tactical methods (abilities), and not some kind of "good" or "bad" character.
Actually, the hero in Heroes is everything; they represent the army and provide it with various bonuses through their stats and abilities. Now the system has become more complex, which is a good thing. "Blood and Tears" simply defines the hero's tactics: either to destroy everyone indiscriminately or to be more balanced and focused on defense, and not just "good or bad." Besides, the army hasn't disappeared. I understand that if heroes were now fighting each other, one could complain that there's "too much RPG."
