The film isn't about some bomb on the sun at all, but about the behavior of people who find themselves in such isolation and in a dangerous situation, and who also have the mission of saving the Earth. The essence is in this, just as the film "The Mist" is not about monsters from some other dimension, but about people and how they can change under pressure. Everything else is just assumptions in a science fiction film; 99% of science fiction would make physicists facepalm if you really think about it.

The film takes place in the near future (2047). The crew of the rescue spacecraft "Lewis and Clark" is sent to Neptune in response to a sudden distress signal from the ship "Event Horizon," which disappeared without a trace seven years earlier. Along with the rescue crew is Dr. William Weir (Sam Neill), a physicist and the designer of the "Event Horizon." When the "Lewis and Clark" arrives in Neptune's orbit, Weir tells the rescuers that the missing ship was actually a secret project for faster-than-light travel. The "Event Horizon's" engine warps space-time and creates an artificial wormhole to any point in the universe. The ship was supposed to jump to Proxima Centauri and return, but it disappeared. The only signal coming from the suddenly reappeared ship consists of heart-wrenching screams and the Latin phrase "liberate me" (Latin for "save me"), repeated in the voice of Captain Kilpatrick.

Finally, the crew learns the truth about where the ship disappeared to. When the ship opened a hole in space-time, it entered a "dimension of true chaos, true evil" – a kind of hell. A video recording of the events of the first jump showed that the members of the first crew, after the engine was activated, indulged in orgies of torture, cannibalism, and violence. The Latin phrase spoken by the deceased captain actually says "liberate tutamae ex inferis" (Latin for "save yourselves from Hell"). But the most terrible thing is that some kind of otherworldly presence has somehow entered the ship itself, which methodically drives the new crew insane. Apparently, this entity is trying to return to the dimension of chaos.
