Another thought occurred to me: the compass might not have been pointing north because there was something metallic nearby, and WishmasteR has Iron Maiden in his signature!

Hmm. If we assume that, then it turns out that the boatswain was the one who killed in the first night, which I don't see the point of. And yes, let me explain why I think the conspirators are dead:
1 - Registrа mentioned the role of the person killed by the maniac in the first night back in the first night.
2 - Aziral'. The description of his execution contained the following phrase:

He drew his saber.

In the list of roles, you can see that the saber is only possessed by the captain (which Aziral' clearly wasn't), the boatswain, and the conspirators. And considering this phrase at the end of the night's summary:

After the last phrase, the boatswain grinned maliciously.

he can't be the boatswain either. As a result, he is clearly a conspirator.
3 - Neyra Drake (or Morning, which I think is less likely). It is clear that one of the players in this pair was a conspirator, and the other was a cannoneer, since the cannoneer's ability does not affect the boatswain, the witch, or the maniac, but it clearly worked in this case.
