Is it worth changing the Punishment System on the forums to one that results in a permanent ban?

While I agree with the idea of a permanent ban, I'd like to add that since points are only accumulated, and even a small number can be given for random violations (spam, off-topic posts, or if a moderator misunderstands something, etc.), and sooner or later everyone could end up being banned, we should occasionally have "forgiveness days" where 5-15 points are removed. With such a system, there would be order, and those who don't want to be banned won't be.
