Let's chalk it up to the fact that a couple of full-length Miyazaki films, the aforementioned "Rain," and a season and a half of Sailor Moon (more than that would be too much for my brain) aren't enough to make objective judgments about the quality of any anime.
There's nothing special here; "viewing experience" doesn't really matter, except in cases where there are jokes about other series (like in "Gintama") or a lack of proper preparation for the absurdity of some things. Otherwise, the situation is the same as with other animated works.
