You're wrong, they are actually quite needed. The units could have been made in a more or less classic style, let's say, partially taken from the fifth game, partially from the third. Just make them more beautiful, add more features. There's no need to fantasize too much. And everyone would be happy. But when they turned orcs into Papuans, and necromancers into some kind of Aztecs, it's unclear why they made such a change.
P.S. At least the shamans look like orcs, which is more familiar.

I don't understand why there's so much dislike for the sixth game.

It's because everything is too extravagant. And I personally got used to the fact that the Heroes games should be more serious.
