It is not for nothing that they say a person is intoxicated by love. Indeed, amphetamines are substances of the light drug class. Therefore, the speech of lovers is sometimes akin to the logic of addicts. And the logic of a young addict is as follows: "I would rather live three years brightly and intensely than fifty years dimly and boringly!" Such speech is a typical sign of drug addiction. Try to take the object of love away from a lover, a syringe from a heroin addict, a bottle from an alcoholic, cards (a betting pool, roulette) from a gambler... The reaction will be violent. Because the nature of their addiction is equally narcotic. The only difference is that some introduce chemical substances into their body artificially, while others provoke their production by the body itself, as lovers and gamblers do. Gamblers are adrenaline addicts. They gamble themselves, as they say, "down to their underwear" and take the last things from the house, just like alcoholics. Adrenaline addicts may not gamble but may rob banks. Or risk their lives in the mountains, engaging in useless mountaineering. Or participate in night street races. Jump with a parachute. Snowboard on unequipped slopes and avalanche-prone areas. The main thing here is that they cannot do without a dose of adrenaline. Long abstinence drives them into a depressive state; life seems gray and boring...
The difference between addicts is not only in whether they are on a "natural" or "artificial" drug, but also in the strength of that drug—some substances kill quickly (for example, the average life expectancy of a heroin addict is 4 years), while others pose no immediate threat to life but can considerably spoil its quality. Like, for example, unhappy love. Or a betting pool. Or marijuana.
As with all drugs, a person gradually becomes accustomed to the amphetamines of love. They require an ever-increasing dose, and the constant irritant (the object of love), due to the same habituation, can no longer cause the emergencies required by the addict at the body's chemical factory. The emotional tornadoes subside, the soul no longer sings. Thus passes earthly love.
According to statistics, the self-healing process lasts three to four years for the average individual. By the way, this period also coincides with the peak of divorces. One can try to warm up a fading feeling by consuming chocolate: chocolate contains a certain amount of PEA. However, for this, one would need to eat chocolate by the kilogram...
And why does love work for 3–4 years on average? To that shortly below.
Why is love needed?
Many believe that Love (having read romantic books, one wants to write this word with a capital letter) is the main thing that distinguishes humans from other animals.
This is a mistake...
Culturologists and ethnographers call love a "pan-humanoid characteristic" because they found traces of it among all peoples in all times. Biologists go even further. They say that love occurs not only in "humanoids" but also in many other animals. In wolves, for example, in swans... Legends are even composed about swan love. One animal likes another animal very much. An attachment arises, which is necessary for the joint upbringing of offspring. The clever Darwin called the phenomenon of personal attraction the second type of sexual selection—based on the "like" or "dislike" criterion.
Why did nature need love? After all, nature does not tolerate excess. Reproduction is possible anyway. Rabbits, for example, cope successfully without any love. They shake and scatter without sentimentality. So why did evolution consolidate such a strange thing as a long-term emotional attachment of one animal to another?
"When the burden on one parent for raising offspring becomes too great, in animal communities, whether fish, birds, or mammals, a strong union appears, joining parents of both sexes throughout the entire period of raising the young," so it is written in a popular book about the origins of mating pairs. And what binds mating pairs? What serves as the attachment of one individual to another? This very thing serves...
Love is not present in all species. Only in those that do not leave their offspring to the mercy of fate, but raise them. It is hard for a female alone. She must feed herself, and carry and feed the child. It would be good if someone helped, brought some food. Who? Well, who else, here is the first candidate—the dear daddy!.. Fine, but what joy is there for daddy in carrying roots to the child and the female? Does he have nothing better to do? Especially if the male is dominant and doesn't give a damn about anyone lower in rank. He might take a banana from a lower-ranking individual... This means some clever thing is needed to tie the male to the female and the offspring. And such a clever thing exists. You know what it is called...
For about three years, a primate's offspring rides on the mother's back, restricting her movements, and then it jumps through the branches as well as adults, leaves the breast, and eats bananas. That is, three years is a perfectly sufficient period to raise a child. There is no need to love the partner more. On the contrary, it would be better to change them to diversify the gene pool. And that is how it happens in nature.
