What's with this trend of guys using female avatars... I wonder what motivates guys to do this (besides being gay or having an incredibly loving partner)...

It's all Galina Sergeevna's fault :D. I saw a photo of a girl on his avatar, and I hadn't noticed how beautiful she was before.

Why does this bother you? I think it's nice to have an image of an attractive girl that's pleasing to look at for both yourself and others (imho).
