riders on lizards are practically useless

they are actually quite useful. I once played with a person, and in a battle between our heroes, I had a much larger army than his. I made the mistake of sending golems (250) forward. The enemy's lizards stood next to the golems (which were the strongest stack in my army), and the harpies (4 stacks of 90) attacked my golems, and then the lizards attacked as well. By the time it was my golems' turn, there were only 30 of them left :)
