By the way, as a purely Christmas story option, there's "The Nutcracker," which has plenty of freaks for the role of villains and good characters galore. And there's a ready-made intrigue - in the fairy tale, the Mouse King crawled out at night and (attention!) demanded that Marie (the main heroine) sacrifice one toy. And you don't have to come up with anything - there it is, a nighttime murder!
