As for the workers, purely considering the history and embodiment of the race, since most members of the race have a tendency towards work, machines, invention, and creation, why not embody a corresponding unit in reality? That's how they turned out, not very combat-oriented, but active and repair units.

I think the borrowings and lack of originality are in the golems, galleys, workers, and ballista.
