Goblins can definitely be melee fighters. In fact, mages usually shoot as well.

And hitting the enemy with boomerangs is a good thing in melee combat:D. Mages may shoot, but you should keep in mind that now there are 2 types of damage in the game, unlike Heroes 5, because Heroes 6 added magical damage; I think all mages will deal magical damage;).
