What nonsense is this? Why send Mold to do the job if he's going to be killed before his turn, according to the order of turns? But if the Mafia didn't kill anyone, then why did they send him? O_o

It wasn't obvious that the paladin would go after him. For the second night, they threatened that she would come, but she apparently had her own reasons.

Apparently, last night the Mafia was sure that the paladin would go after the knight (we threatened that it would happen), so they sent the mage "on the job." However, the paladin didn't touch anyone, and only because of the failed kill, we didn't get evidence against the mage (well, thank goodness it was a failed kill, in general).

Sending the same Mafia member to kill for the second time is more than logical if he's already suspected: why give evidence against a new Mafia member? Apparently, the Mafia decided to correct the mistake of the previous night, and this time everything worked exactly the opposite.
