Bird brain, small mass, few convolutions. I can't immediately recall anything other than King's Bounty or "Alice in Wonderland" where there were truly intelligent griffins. It's understandable – it's a fantasy monster.

Well, if we're being serious, some birds from the corvid family are smarter than many mammals. Maybe griffins are intelligent birds. Remember the cutscene for the mission featuring Kurak... However, I think a griffin could be either a core or elite unit, and I don't consider the Devoted One a castle unit. I think that if they are in the game, they will be a summon. We'll see.
