For me, the most important thing in the book is something else. I see a parallel with life. "There is no good and no evil – there is only power." Perhaps. Perhaps, evil didn't exist until people invented good. Perhaps, evil is when someone steals from you, and good is when you steal from others. There is no good or evil in nature. The strongest survives. But the strongest in nature will never want to cut down all the living things in the forest. Greed is inherent only to humans. And only humans have a conscience. And if a person's capabilities are expanded – through science or magic – how far will they go? Will they be able to stop?
I know people for whom making money is the most important thing in life. They will never have enough. They will stop at nothing. They will kneel before Mammon and shout, "More, more!" and die under the weight of the gold that has fallen on them.
And I know others who have earned a lot of money, but stopped and wondered – do they really need it? Is that the meaning of life? Or maybe it's about living far away from a world steeped in greed, loving their loved ones, and protecting them?
