Not necessarily ordinary mortals. But why not, if that's the case? Of course, we're not talking about a peasant with a pitchfork, but about someone impressive. In the main menu of the original Heroes 5, a pathetic, ordinary mortal inquisitor overcomes the devil.

By the way, where did you get the idea that the strength of an angel is equal to the average strength of a demon? In "Heroes 5" (and "Heroes 3" as well), angels are the opposite of demons, not all demons in general; they are even stronger than devils.

And why didn't you mention the fourth game?
This opposition is a game convention. 3DO really wanted to give players in the third part a strong super-unit for the humans, and they put an angel on the seventh level. Well, that's fine, but making the Devil a common unit is clever, of course. I hope XEL doesn't run in here now and start quoting from the lore.
