There isn't a single most useful spell! They are effective only in combinations, and different spells are useful in different situations. "Charm" helps to eliminate hordes of neutral creatures, but it's not very useful against an army with a hero. It's better not to risk casting single spells against a mage – you know what will happen ;). "Berserk" is sometimes better than "Charm," and sometimes it's better to hit the enemy with "Earth Shock." So, you need to think about it for a long time. "Divine Retribution" is also very useful – the more enemies a unit kills, the more damage it will receive in return :).
