Why would that be? How can an earth elemental relate to strength?

Gargantua is not an earth elemental; they are two different creatures.

And I think it would be good to replace the fairies with leprechauns. And for the mages, replace the gremlins with hobbits.

Are we just going to ignore the lore of the game? Hobbits and leprechauns were never mentioned in Heroes of Might and Magic V or Dark Messiah.

That's exactly why they are almost extinct, so there's no need for dumb fighters. It's one thing to mention them in the lore, and another to create fighters about whom almost nothing is known.

That gives room for imagination when creating the Faceless Ones. They are actually good fighters, and at the time of Heroes of Might and Magic VI, they are not yet extinct.
