The only problem is that 40 mana is often not enough.

In The Legend, this problem is solved very simply. Don't develop the Poison Cloud spell; leave it at level 1 to reduce the damage. Instead, use Summoned creatures as a source of mana, and place the Poison Cloud spell above them. Mana will flow like a stream.
