A THREAD FOR NEWCOMERS!

Who can help with this question: what is the maximum number of heroes that can be hired so that they are all present in the game? In Heroes of Might and Magic V, their number is limited to eight, but how is it in Heroes of Might and Magic III? (I just argued with someone, and he claims that it's practically an unlimited number, but I doubt it). :)
