nprf explained a bit, but apparently didn't want to go into the nuances. Armageddon is the best way to take down Azure Dragons without using the main hero and a serious army for the job!
And to get Armageddon, you need Wisdom — it's a level 4 spell — and Eagle Eye — it's a level 4 spell!!! ;)
Also, the experience from the battle can become very important. The map allowed, with scouting, to boost a hero to level 40 without visiting trees! Just calculate the bonus for Crag Hack or Malekith (whichever you prefer!) and it will be clear that the difference in troop numbers will be offset by the stats.
