In the bottom left corner of the arena, there are buttons for "flee" and "auto-battle on/off."
To steal a map, you need to try hard. For example, I haven't managed to do it even once. You need to approach the guard, distract it from the map, quickly fly to the map with a fly spell, pick it up, and fly away. But everything needs to be done very quickly. In my opinion, it's much easier to defeat the guard than to dance around it.
You can never have too many soldiers!
There are situations where that's not true. Two trolls, without any losses, will earn more leadership and help the hero develop better than a bunch of small creatures with inevitable losses. Losses are especially critical for a warrior, with his weak magic. That's why I think the warrior is the most difficult character out of the three possible ones. However, this is not noticeable on the easy level.
