And it is for this reason that trials are sent to a person—so that their choice may be more conscious. They can overcome them, in which case they are better off; or they may fail and end up with a sort of "retake" ;); only retaking here is usually harder than passing the first time. That is why I believe that trials and the evil of suffering are necessary (and on this point, I completely agree with AlexeyPunk), and since God—as I believe :)—is benevolent, He does not send a person trials that they could not overcome (I'm with you, Nowizard! :D).
To use a loose metaphor, God throws a brick at the person :D, and the person dodges. God could shoot from a sling, but He doesn't do it if He knows for sure that the person won't dodge. And this must be done because a person who has closed themselves off and retreated from the world opens themselves up to dark thoughts and becomes withdrawn.
