I think the game should "mature" with each iteration, not degrade.

In what way is it degrading? The graphics are better, and the gameplay has changed; it's clear that the game is being made with multiplayer in mind. The only thing that's a shame is that there will be 5 factions, and we only know about 3, and even then, we only know about the Necropolis warriors, while we only know a little about the others.
