Ranger - "Higher Vampire" [5th Campaign, 5th Mission]

I don't know, maybe I really am taking too long, but I've tried capturing cities (I captured 4) and attacking their heroes, but I suffer such losses... and it takes a lot of time to recover. How can I prevent their army from growing so quickly?
