On the topic: not so long ago, in some tournament game on a small map, my Vistan (level 7, 8, without a book, expert in shooting and armor) at the beginning of the second week, without ambushes, with his natural growth (bulls, ducks in the castle) and 1 angel, without artifacts, defeated Consul Max on the swamp map. Losses: bulls, gnolls, 2 ducks, and 2 flies. Bron with his tank wouldn't even have ventured there.
I wasn't particularly concerned about choosing a starting hero, but after that incident, I had no doubts at all, because green lizardmen are a force!
