I've also noticed this: if a town is guarded by upgraded Medusas, for example, then after capturing the town, you can buy both Trolls and Harpies. But if, for example, only Harpies are guarding it, then the number you kill is subtracted from the growth rate of the town that is available to buy. That is, if 10 Harpies were guarding it, for example, then there will be 5 Harpies left in the town + Trolls.
