I would also like to hear an answer to the question of why it's not a good idea to build a Necropolis as your second town?

Well, perhaps the idea was that you can hire a Necromancer and create skeletons. And in the Necropolis (cemetery in the Castle), you can hire additional units and upgrade them.
You can even switch to Necropolis entirely if you capture it early enough. That's why they try to eliminate it as a priority.
