As mentioned above, the economic aspect is important. The world is built on the principle that money is equivalent to the value of other goods; in our case, money is gold, and goods are resources. Or are you going to build a castle out of a single piece of gold, although it's conceivable that the gold was exchanged for stone and wood for construction.
