The laws aren't lenient, or do you think kicking someone around for the rest of their life in a cell seems quite mild? I don't think it's much better than being shot, lol.

Actually, it's much better than being shot. It's a well-known fact that people get so used to being in prison that after they get out, it doesn't take long before they end up back inside for some minor offense. Well, that's among criminals.
