Today, after publishing the post, everything strangely started working. I finally managed to play.
On both computers, I disabled the firewall as a service (Windows XP).
It's a standard local network with a switch.

I've encountered similar problems, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. There can be many reasons for this. The simplest solution is to combine TCP and IPX if possible. You can also try killing dplaysrv.exe on the machine that's acting as the server and entering the IP address manually.
