Prometheus and Pandora. Prometheus, son of the Titan Iapetus, gave fire to mankind. He stole it from Zeus. Zeus punished Prometheus, but he could not take the fire away from people – the idea of the irreversibility of progress. Zeus can only compensate for the good that people have received with evil. Zeus hates people. He orders the other gods to create a woman. The name of this first woman is Pandora (i.e., "all-gifted"). She is beautiful, but she has a "two-faced, deceitful soul" (68).
