Discussion about Dungeon (Dark Elves).

Furthermore, I cannot agree that Assassins are a level 1 unit; it's just a formality. They are realistically level 3. And please explain to me, the slow-witted one ;) , what the problem is with having archers of varying strength for a faction? I don't think that Medusa/Beholder was a stronger combination.

I'll explain.
Level 1 is level 1, no matter where you are. They only pose a threat in large numbers. But these numbers have a tendency to die from Hit&Run tactics. However, this isn't an argument (as you can also eliminate the rest).
Look at this. Let's take a difficulty level where resources are very limited (the last and second-to-last). We're talking about the classic difficulties in Heroes, not the ones in the beta. Level 1 units are easy to build, as are levels up to 4.
So, the Medusa/Beholder combination is very easily achievable (including in Heroes 4). But what will we have at level 5? Until we build level 6 (which requires a lot of money), we are forced to rely on just one level 1 unit. Taking Furies into battle is expensive, and it's a pity (because they attack and retaliate), and there's no money for upgrades. Minotaurs and Raiders are weak, and therefore losses are possible. And archers, of course, make clearing the area easier.
So, the advantage of the Medusa/Beholder combination is its low cost, strength, and decent special abilities.
But in Heroes 5, scouts are cheap, but there are few of them. And Matrons, as archers, don't look good in numbers of 3-4, because they are busy casting spells.
So, the Dungeon faction plays roughly the same way as the Swamp faction in Heroes 3, relying on low-level archers. They excel with magic, but creating a situation where they don't need to use magic is practically impossible. And sometimes, every extra mana point counts.
All of this is just my opinion. I generally like to play perfectly: without losing units or mana, and only spending reserves in difficult situations. But Heroes 5 doesn't allow for this kind of play.

And there's no need to even talk about the superiority of Medusa/Beholder from Heroes 4 over Matron/Scout. Matron/Scout have no chance :)
