I don't think the Elves really need the split-shot ability. They already have a decent supply (12 for the Sylvan, 16 for the Grand Elves), so instead of giving the enemy free shots, it makes more sense to focus on directly and quickly reducing the number of Elves themselves; after all, their damage is GREATER than their hit points (the only unit in the game with this characteristic).
But I agree that the animation for the double shot should be different from the single shot – it's not right. It should depict what's actually happening, not just the final result, IMHO.
