My suggestion was to allow Hardcore players to play against a bot; this is better than automatically assigning them to a team (although that's also fine).

What's this about? I think it's absurd that an outsider and uninterested person would decide the outcome. It's better to have the tech win. In that case, all the blame will be on those who didn't show up.
